Tufenkian Fine Arts is pleased to present a selection of paintings by Los Angeles-based artist Tanner Goldbeck. Goldbeck's innovative approach to tearing down and repurposing his own existing art takes center stage, offering viewers a unique glimpse into the artist's evolving creative process. In his exploration, Goldbeck navigates the delicate balance between control and spontaneity. Here, the streets of downtown Los Angeles serve as both inspiration and canvas, with the artist tapping into the city's history and energy to infuse his work with depth and dynamism. With a focus on the internal process of deconstruction and repurposing, Goldbeck’s paintings are a testament to the interplay between control and chaos, inviting audiences to explore the nuances of each moment.

Goldbeck considers himself a painter first and foremost above all other mark making forms of expression. The artist’s interest in line art is the fundamental structure which connects his works, with each piece reflecting a playful tension between control and chaos. The linear elements define space and inherently contain volume while color and textures fight to break down boundaries and add emotion. His paintings build and erase themselves using harmony and dissonance, dark humor and intuition, layers of material and the energy of movement.

Familiar lines that hold memory have more value for Goldbeck. The artist uses a stock of ink drawings from past commercial jobs which he deconstructs and reassembles at will. From this starting point, the artist maintains a loose concept of where each piece might go. Multiple layers of colors add and subtract positive and negative shapes in an exchange of speed, cadence, and volume equivalent to the mood as it evolves.
